Joseph Nelson is the Director of Real-Time Trading Operations at Guzman Energy. He joined Guzman in May 2023 as a Senior Real-Time Trader and has played a key role in building and scaling the real-time trading desk through strengthened training programs, improved knowledge capture, and expanded use of internal data systems.
As Manager of Real-Time Trading, Joseph led initiatives to enhance market submissions, data capture, and transmission optimization by expanding the firm’s use of its internal platform, Aegis. His work helped improve operational efficiency and decision-making across real-time market activity.
Prior to Guzman, Joseph spent five years at Tenaska Power Services (TPS) in Dallas, where he progressed from real-time operations into real-time trading across U.S. power markets. During his tenure, he worked on the ERCOT energy management desk, with a focus on natural gas peakers, load resources, and energy storage. He also helped start, build, and manage TPS’s real-time energy management desk, supporting customer asset dispatch and BESS optimization with a focus in CAISO and ERCOT.
Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alabama. While at Alabama, he helped found the university’s Camp Kesem chapter, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children whose families are affected by cancer. He lives in Denver, Colorado, and enjoys the outdoors, photography, music, and weightlifting. He is also an active member of his church choir.
