Leopoldo Guzman discusses challenges and opportunities in the wholesale energy market
(September 23, 2014; Denver, CO) Guzman Energy Chairman and CEO Leopoldo Guzman participated in a special panel discussion during the NAEMA – WSPP 2014 Fall Conference, taking place this week in Denver, CO. Mr. Guzman spoke about the intricacies of operating a small business in the wholesale energy market. He spoke specifically about the challenges presented by credit policies at leading utilities and called on them to reevaluate these policies in light of the exit of the large banks from the business.
“It’s time for the regulated utilities to realize that the landscape has changed – the large banks are leaving and, along with them, the large balance sheets,” said Mr. Guzman. “This is a fundamental change in our industry and one that calls for a re-evaluation of how credit is allocated to strong, healthy small businesses.”
The conference’s Diverse Business Enterprises Special Session was sponsored by three California investor owned utilities. Serving on the panel with Mr. Guzman were senior representatives from EDF Trading and NRG.
Guzman has more than 40 years of energy and finance experience. In addition to his role with Guzman Energy, he serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Guzman & Company, a boutique investment bank focused on the domestic energy and power industries, which he founded in 1987.
